The New Sounds OUT POST, started in 1995 by Hayden Porter, provides information about New and contemporary classical music (see below) in Northeast Ohio.
To many people's surprise, the concept of writing your music out on paper and having a group of musicians perform your piece on acoustic instruments before an audience is alive and well in these United States. While it may not sell millions or attract millions, there are still many adventurous folks out there, who want an active experience with art music rather than a passive form of entertainment, and who make up a devoted and consistent audience.
My goal in creating the OUT POST is to inform the community both "web" and local about New music in Northeast Ohio (Akron/Canton, Cleveland, Oberlin, Youngstown). Hopefully, the OUT POST can help to perk the curiosity of those not already familiar with New music and to encourage the New music aficionado to more thoroughly explore his/her local community for New music events and resources.
A thorough explanation of the topic,"What is New music?", is beyond the scope of this web site and ... this author. However, I can attempt to help the laymen get a ballpark idea of "What is New music?".
New music is generally experimental in its compositional technique, performance or in its use of sound. This does not mean that you have to be a musician to appreciate new music. It just means that the people who created it wanted to hear (and you to hear) what music would sound like if ...
The term most commonly refers to recently composed classical music and electronic music. There are, however, many other types of musical traditions which come together to form New music.
Some synonyms (each with their own ambiguity) for New music are: 20th century music, Avant garde music, Contemporary Classical music, Modern music, Electro-Acoustic music, experimental music etc. More specific genres included within New music are: recently composed Classical music (as in the last 40 years), Electronic music, Third stream music,Performance art, Experimental improvisatory music, Microtonal music, Experimental Jazz or rock music and others.
In concluding, I would like to say that the best way to find out about New music is to go to a new music concert and listen.
